So you know what annoys me almost as much as people voting or not voting for someone simply because of their skin color? This. Not the whole thing, mind you; their intentions were probably noble, and they defeat some prevailing stereotypes, which is to be commended ( Read more... )

I agree.

I think we will have very little trouble with mixing cultures, because our kids will be - well, kids - when we get them. Most of what they remember about their birth country will be what we tell them.

It reminds me of "Diversity Day" when Michael says he is "color blind" and Mr. Brown (who is black) says that's not the way to act. We should celebrate differences instead of pretending they're not there!

I think color-blindness is appropriate in some contexts and not in others. For instance, when you meet a new person it's appropriate to judge/get to know him as one unique individual without regard to mere skin color. THAT is sometimes what people mean when they say "there is no black or white" and it's what MLK meant in the "I have a dream" speech, I think.

On the other hand, as you said, racial/ethnic/cultural backgrounds help to shape our individual characters so if you met a person with an African heritage, while you judge him without regard to color as color, you do also appreciate that his background is part of him and you'd probably be curious about it if your own background was different. Which is also a good response.

IF that makes any sense whatsoever -- I'm kind of thinking as I type.

That makes sense and that's what I'm saying. Obviously you don't judge by skin tone - that's stupid - but saying that it doesn't exist at all? That's just dumb. Obviously differences exist. If they didn't, we'd have a pretty boring world!
