Now I'm sure that if I won Celebrity Jeopardy, I would donate my money to wikileaks. After all, I couldn't donate to them with my visa card even if I wanted to. So how else could I make the donation? Note: I can donate to stormfront, the leading white power website via visa; I can also donate to the KKK with my visa. But not wikileaks! Before ( Read more... )

That is interesting to note - someone should push this on BoingBoing and/or Slashdot and/or other blogs that might be able to put some sort of pressure on Amazon and Visa and other companies that seem to be treating these clearly awful groups better than they're treating Wikileaks, which is at worst harming people unintentionally.

I'm sure they are all aware of it. But it does, I think, clearly demonstrate that those companies are bowing to governmental pressure, and not just acting out of some consumer pressure or, ethical reasons.

The trick is that the company perceives a legal risk in WikiLeaks but not in Stormfront ( ... )

I am actually thought about trying to find websites for donating to Hezbollah or Hamas, because that would have made my point as best it could be, but figured that wouldn't be the smartest idea in the world.

And I actually don't think the KKK is all that dangerous, really. The dangerous white supremacist groups have moved on. The KKK types are just stupid racists, as far as I can tell, and the relevant hate crimes aren't really enacted under their umbrella.

But, in any case, I really doubt that the amazon/visa/mastercard deal has anything to do with legal liability, and instead has everything to do with them bowing to extra-legal governmental pressure.

I would suggest that if you want to make a donation in support of the dissemination of this information then you should donate to the defence fund of the guy alleged to have copied the data.

Having said that it appears that the bradley manning defence fund donations page is redirecting in a way that will never complete.

well to be honest why wouldn't they need massive amounts of money? If someone were willing to hand over large wadges of cash to me then I could find a pressing need.
More seriously I would expect that they would be building up a significant legal fund given that they will inevitably (assuming they acheive lasting success in their chosen field of endeavour) be requiring the services of lawyers in several jurisdictions.

wikileaks would probably like to do that, but, you know the swiss froze the legal defense fund.

Switzerland: Deposit your money here, despots, but fuck you wikileaks.

so, i know that this isn't at all touching on the point of your post, BUT...I was volunteering at this opera cocktail party silent auction thing tonight and one of the prizes was 4 VIP tickets to a Jeopardy taping! It only went for like $150!!! Someone got quite the steal I'd say....

It costs that much to just go watch Jeopardy? What is involved with this "VIP" treatment? I have actually had a handshake with Alex Trebek before, after all :).
