This one is probably obvious...

LOL JK, JK.

It's actually...

Joss Whedon knows how to pull at my emotions more than any other person, and Serenity is the perfect example of that. The movie won't make nearly as much sense if you haven't seen the TV show Firefly, but if you haven't seen either, you absolutely MUST as soon as you possibly can.

***SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT***

Serenity strays from the classic archetypal plot of good vs. evil. It's not as simple as Republic -> Good, Rebels -> Bad, or Federation -> Good, Klingons -> Bad. The main characters are rightfully labeled as criminals and are on the from from the Alliance (federation of planets) who are trying to get back a girl, River Tamm, who the crew are harboring on their ship called Serenity. As learned in the TV series, River was tricked into going to a prestigious Alliance academy for very gifted children, but the "academy" was actually a facility where they performed tests on her, cut into her brain, and embedded memories in her head that weren't her own, a side effect of all this being her developing psychic-like abilities. Now, obviously, the Alliance want her back, but the crew of Serenity aren't so willing. The more they look into what the Alliance did to her, the more they find out about the secret memories that River was implanted with (and are driving her crazy). My favorite thing about this movie is all the philosophy. It raises the question of: Do you think that people can be made better? And if so, would you decide to make people better if given the chance?
