For the most part, what keeps one foot in fandom for me is challenges/new material. When a show ends, I lost interest after awhile because there isn't anything new for me to play with. However, my new shiny is the Supernatural TV show and since its on air now, there is always new material to bend and shape. XD
The other thing about fanfiction is that I still sometimes am disappointed with the way things go, or want to explore a character's emotions more than the show does (everybody has that one character that just...never gets developed, even though they should!).
I have, however, been playing with my own worlds recently and I enjoy that plenty. Sometimes, though, indulging in fanfic is easier when I want to write but don't want to put the effort in trying to world-build.
I do both, write off of other ppl's work and do my own. I usually prefer my own cuz then I can do whatever the fuck I want XD THough slapping an OOC or AU does the same thing in most fandom stuff. For me writing off other ppls stuff is still kinda new, I didnt start til sometime in 2007 with Ghost Hunt. The biggest draw to writing that is most of the big questions we all wanted answered havent been and probably wont be (Ah Ono Fuyumi I love you but...) so making our own conclusions is kinda fun

What drives me in fandom are... the love for the characters I guess. But I'm a fan artist so maybe this doesn't apply to you XD;;; I just enjoy putting characters I like in different situations whether inside or outside of canon and exploring the possibilities, making use of canon loopholes. What I like about alot of fanfiction is that, sometimes it gives me a possible deeper insight to a character. In a way, yes, because the foundations are already laid, so they're easier to play with

What Seki said in her first paragraph. I like restraints as they challenge me to look for solutions that work (wth this is sounding like a resume), and fanon is the only way to appease myself in wake of canon's many disappointments ^^". Also, I like being able to share love of a series with other people, and that kind of opportunity is kinda... limited if I want to fangirl my own original creation.
Plus, it's always interesting to see your viewership's feedbacks, eg. how your interp compares with other fanartists' interps. Then again, my inability to design original characters might also be a huge factor. For now, I'm content with being labeled fanartist instead of artist XD
My "what if" brain what leave me alone. "What if X happened instead of Y"? Plus, sometimes I want things to end happier, or characters not to die, or I just love character Z SO MUCH AND WHY ISN'T THERE MORE OF HIM/HER.
So yeah. I love the show/game/whatever, I want more of it. In a nut shell.
