Ready, set.

The surgeon suggested I spend the days before surgery getting things ready for being housebound for so long. My way of coping with stress is to organize and/or clean, so this is like having your doctor tell you to watch more movies. Accordingly, I spent much of yesterday making the apartment accessible ( Read more... )

A friend of my husband's broke a foot right before a business trip out to our city. Instead of crutches, she had something I'd never seen before, sort of like a cross between a walker, a Razor-style scooter, and a wheelchair. Basically, picture the kind of walker that's on wheels, but with a cradle for her lower leg. It seemed easier for her to get around that way because there was a place to put things she wanted to carry and she could still use her leg the upper part) to support her weight.

I wonder if something like that would be helpful for you, to keep your ankle and not the rest of you immobile? But I suppose all doctors probably know about those now and yours would have said if it would help.

ETA: Apparently it's called knee scooter">

It's called a knee walker. I have one to use around the house. Because the PT doesn't like me on Canadian crutches, and I am no longer allowed to use regular crutches. I have now had to learn to use Canadian ones, but I still use the walker because I can't carry anything with the crutches.

If you do a search on "Knee Walker," you'll find several models. Also a variety of vintage dolls with working joints.

I think you should. Try to get a steerable one, if you can. The non-steerable are okay, but you have to lift the front wheels to turn them.

Really sorry about your ankle!
Love your books and the stories on the web.
Hope it all goes well, and thanks for the fabric site....
This makes you officially a bad influence on me, which is my favorite kind.

Thank you, Patty! I have that effect on lots of people -- the "bad influence" part, not the "love" part. :-)

Oh, I recognize these from when we spent many a happy hour shopping together online in chat! We had such weird plans for these fabrics. I'm glad they will be there to keep you company in the weeks ahead. See you soon.
