If I had my way (and the government wasn't in quite the dire financial straits it's currently in) I would mandate government-funded semesters abroad for every college student in the US, and extend interest-free loans to students who wanted to do it for a second semester.
The US is ridiculously behind the rest of the world in terms of how much time its students spend abroad. It's absolutely one of the most important things you can do as a student.
Plus Spain's an awesome country and everyone should go there once. If money's that much of an issue see if you can find loans or scholarships to help make it work.
Studying abroad would be a great opportunity, I think. I've never regretted any of the traveling I've done, even though I'm still paying off the debt from some of it. The experiences you get to carry with you for life more than make up for the money you have to put into it.
