Les Miserables is fantastic.

I would suggest Charles Baudelaire, particularly Flowers del Mar, or The Flowers of Evil. Poetry, but fantastic poetry. Maybe a bit of Lovecraft if you're up for that type. Or, I'd suggest Hamlet. It's my favourite piece by Shakespeare.
