Seriously worried about Mamma Earth

Apr 14, 2010 09:22

And it really does not help that I just watched 2012... but wow she's really trying shake us off her something bad.

Lots of earthquakes all over the place - newest one in Chile. Volcanos spewing - Iceland.

Is anyone else worried or am I just being panick-ey?

There have been many times throughout the ages when concern was warranted.

But I think it's going to be like the movie -- awful, awful, awful, then got better at the end.

I attended a workshop several months ago by R. J. Stewart, whose opinion I have great respect for when it comes to esoteric matters like the whole 2012 thing. 2012 wasn't the topic of the workshop, but he mentioned that the 2012 date should not be interpreted as a specific moment in time - astronomical alignments are really, really big things. It takes decades to move into one, and then out again. 2012 just marks the point at which we're moving out of the alignment again. Looked at in that light, we've probably been having it for the last 20 years or so (assuming you put any real stock in it, which I don't).

I have this mental image of two Mayan stone carvers looking at each other and saying "Hey, how far should we carve? I'm up to 2012." and the other guy saying. "Stop there. Somebody will start another stone when we get close to that date." Kind of like all the programmers who never worried that their code might be still being used after 1999....

On the earthquake thing, I heard an interview on NPR today with a seismologist who said that there are an average of 16 magnitude 7 or better earthquakes every year, we just don't hear about them because they happen in the middle of the ocean. We've had six 7+ earthquakes this year, so we're right on track for normal.
