Books are a salve for the soul....ever my most cherished refuge from things I'd rather not face. We went to Barnes and Noble for a bit of retail therapy and, several books later, I feel hermit-like. One would think that lazing about amongst the book aisles for almost six hours would be enough for me. I don't think it ever can be. My latest

I envy you so much now ;_;
Good book, hot tea, comfortable chair and warm blanket (save the alarm clock - who needs to be cruelly awaken from the blissful nap if happens :)) and no people around it is everything I need at the moment. But no! I have to work.
Not fair, as always ^^'

I can give up television, chocolate and other such things but two things I absolutely cannot live without: books and music.
Books have always been my escape from reality. If only the world were as colourful, ever-changing and surreal as the fantasy world within a good book. No e-books for me. I want to feel the pages, to feel the weight of a hardcover or the yielding flesh of a softcover. Reading, for me, is a religion. I simply cannot imagine anyone NOT wanting to, or disliking the act of, reading.

Or maybe I don't have enough time to read leisurely (but I'm sure you'd tell me that I could make time if I wanted to).
As you can't live without books and music.. I would have to say that music is a something that could never ever live without. It's the spell that the melody and lyrics weave together -- that becomes my personal escape from reality. With it, I can drown anyone out; the mufflers of the cars passing by as I cross Belvidere, the voices of people around me..
Even myself.
I can completely understand how books can be a staple in your life -- to immerse yourself in something that makes you temporarly forgo all of the immediate wordly problems that you might be having.
It's not entirely the same sometimes for music, as you can just enhance whatever your feeling is at the moment, but I suppose it's better than hearing yourself cry or yell in a silent room.
.. lol.

I think reading requires a sort of patience. It's meditative in nature, to some extent. Reading requires that one slow down and take the time to absorb the words, what's being said, no matter how simple the story. I think that's why younger people have a hard time with actually picking up a book to read. In a world of instant gratification, reading is a relative dinosaur. Why read an actual book with paper when one has a PDA, a Gameboy, e-books, etc? This may be the mindset that prevents people from reading nowadays. Another reason could be that, in order to read a book, one would have to take time out of an already busy schedule to slow down. That might be unacceptable to some.
