Rogue Touch? AKA - X-men for Chicks?

I will wholeheartedly admit that I willingly and quite often read what could be considered "chick-lit" I loathe that term though. Why in the world should a story that's heavy on the romance and/or sex be categorized solely as "chick-lit" is beyond me ( Read more... )

I really, really hate the whole chick-lit thing! And it's the publishing industry in general, not just comics. Books that twenty years ago would have been published as sci fi or fantasy now have to be either paranormal romance or have to go to an epublisher. I asked my agent where the line is, what makes it romance rather than a book with characters who are involved? She said:

1. That the main characters are likeable. If they are likeable, it's a romance.

2. If there is a positive ending. Not necessarily a happy ending with a white wedding and flowers, but not a tragic ending in which he chokes her to death or everyone dies, it's a romance.

3. If there is an emphasis on relationships as motivation for the characters. If they are acting at least in part because of their feelings or commitments.

Now, by this definition, most of western literature is chick lit. But wait! There is one more very important distinction!

4. If the author is a woman.

A woman huh? Heehee, that makes me wonder if a man wanted to write epic romance chick lit does he need to use a pen name so it can be qualified as such?

Oh wait...........I forgot about Nicholas Sparks.....never mind!

I read something about that book today. Apparently they're doing one about She-Hulk, too. I'm REALLY not sure about the whole idea. I tend to try and keep an open mind about things like this. I mean, it could turn out to be really good. Maybe.

But ... I LOVE Rogue. :-( I hate to see her getting pushed into "chick-lit". And I agree with amenirdis. This whole "chick-lit" thing as a whole is ridiculous.

The books are fine. Some of them are really good and some of them would be better off as paperweights, but I hate the way so many are being classified and shoved off into this category. Just the term "chick-lit" seems so derogatory. It makes it sound as if they are meant solely for the pre-post adolescent teenage girls, and if you don't fall into that age bracket, you must be a moron or a housewife with no sex life. God forbid the story actually be well-written and engaging!!!

Sorry. Rant over. I still worry about crossing beloved comic book characters into that genre, though. Hmmm ...

Yes! She-Hulk was the other one! I'd rather just give my girlies the comic books and be done with it but perhaps we can make my 12 year old take one for the team and she can report back her impressions on the marginalization of comic book heroines. No doubt she'll have strong opinions on it one way or another.
