I will wholeheartedly admit that I willingly and quite often read what could be considered "chick-lit" I loathe that term though. Why in the world should a story that's heavy on the romance and/or sex be categorized solely as "chick-lit" is beyond me

1. That the main characters are likeable. If they are likeable, it's a romance.
2. If there is a positive ending. Not necessarily a happy ending with a white wedding and flowers, but not a tragic ending in which he chokes her to death or everyone dies, it's a romance.
3. If there is an emphasis on relationships as motivation for the characters. If they are acting at least in part because of their feelings or commitments.
Now, by this definition, most of western literature is chick lit. But wait! There is one more very important distinction!
4. If the author is a woman.

But ... I LOVE Rogue. :-( I hate to see her getting pushed into "chick-lit". And I agree with amenirdis. This whole "chick-lit" thing as a whole is ridiculous.
The books are fine. Some of them are really good and some of them would be better off as paperweights, but I hate the way so many are being classified and shoved off into this category. Just the term "chick-lit" seems so derogatory. It makes it sound as if they are meant solely for the pre-post adolescent teenage girls, and if you don't fall into that age bracket, you must be a moron or a housewife with no sex life. God forbid the story actually be well-written and engaging!!!
Sorry. Rant over. I still worry about crossing beloved comic book characters into that genre, though. Hmmm ...
