It was her worst nightmare. The very reason Natasha had tried to do this 'mission' in Russia on her own. Her past left her with too many enemies, too many people who wanted her dead, and worse the people she'd grown to care about dead, too. Nothing terrified the Black Widow more than the thought of losing the family she'd built.

But Clint has ( Read more... )

He knew how he got hurt, he knew he did. But fucking head injuries. He couldn't say it or put it all together in any way that made sense. He was even just vaguely aware of Tasha pulling him somewhere.

Pain was good at overriding the sense to stay quiet. Even once they stopped, it flared up and he groaned, turning his head into her. There was a bullet in his leg that needed to come out, and as for the rest of it, he could be stabilized by field medicine, but he really needed more than that. He needed the pain to stop. Clint Barton knew how to handle pain. He was one of those children who became an expert on it very early on. He knew when to shut up, when to keep it in and how to ignore it and press on. But it was pain and it fucking hurt.

"Tasha.." There was that fucking head injury again. He couldn't keep his eyes open, but he was still aware.

Phil hadn't seen either Clint nor Tasha, but the two of them freelancing wasn't out of the question. As long as it didn't interfere with their work for SHIELD or the Avengers Initiative, no one was going to say anything to them. So, it came as a bit of a surprise to him when his cellphone rang in the middle of the night. He was awake. One of those sleepless nights when he would sit up and do paperwork because he didn't want to be in bed. And without Clint there, it made sleeping that much more difficult.

He picked up his phone and connected the call, not wasting any time with pleasantries. Those were reserved for people he wasn't sleeping with.

"I hope you're telling me you're coming home soon."

Little did he know, it wasn't Clint on the other end.

"Stay awake, Clint. C'mon." Tasha shakes his shoulder gently as she waits for Phil to pick up. "Barton! Look at me!" Natasha shouts, hoping to keep him from passing out. She can't move him if he does, she's not strong enough.

Then she hears Phil's voice, and somehow it's not the relief she expected it to be. What the hell has she done letting Clint come with her like this? If he dies...

No.

NO. That was not going to happen.

"Phil?" Tasha says as she shifts around to force Clint's eyes open. She knows Phil will be able to find them, send someone to extract them but...God, how can she tell him what's happened to Clint? "We need extraction. Clint's..." The tone of her voice makes it clear it's very bad. "Just hurry."

He was awake. He could hear it, he just didn't want to open his eyes. It was so much easier to just conserve his strength and lay their, but he could hear her side of the conversation. Phil's name.

Clint settled for moving his arm onto her leg. At least she'd know he was awake, hopefully. That was the way out of there; if anyone could get them home, it would be Phil. But they hadn't exactly been very forthcoming about where they were going.

Trying to move just made him hurt again. He looked up at her drowsily, trying to focus. "T..Tasha. Phil?"
