In the small town I live in in the North of England there are currently over 400 empty flats, which developers 'threw up' in an attempt to make as much money as possible as peoples' greed in making money from their homes continued unabated for several decades. There are also many empty houses in areas that were once beautiful open countryside.
Over here there is a 'credit crunch' where people can no longer afford to buy themselves a home. As our 'problems' started with the sub-prime market in the USA, I wonder if it has started to hit the homes market over in the USA.
I too love buildings, especially the well built ones! Sadly, at least over here, I could tell you many horror stories about the lack of care that has gone into many modern buildings!!
Having spent several weeks homeless, a few years ago, empty homes make me almost angry as I fully know how so many people have a desperate need for somewhere to live.
In my home town here, at one time we had about half a dozen houses that had been abandoned in various states of construction. As kids, we would use them as playhouses. As an adult, it scares me to think we did that.
Oh I love abandoned houses too. My mother, when I was a wee lass, took me to Vermont and we went house hunting. There were several old, abandoned victorian era homes tucked away into the trees, that the forests were beginning to take back (this was, gosh, 16 years ago now). I remember the darkness, and the broken dishes on the table, and the leaves starting to grow through the roof, and the molded piano. Mmmm. man... We should go house hunting together and see if some of those still exist.
