I'm all chatty and stuff...

Ya know, I don't know why, or how even, but I was thinking about that fanfic for profit thing that happened forever ago just now (which I thought, and still think, was blown WAY out of proportion, and was discussed ad nauseum over here, so if you simply must tell me why I'm wrong again, please do it there) and it makes me want to think about it ( Read more... )

Personally, I think asking for money to write fanfic is way out of line. It's one thing to play in someone else's world, but to make money off it? Very WTF to me. For example, it's one thing for me to dl an album by Tom Waits or something, it's another for me to burn that album to discs, sell them, and pocket the money. (/dumbest analogy ever)

No, I agree with you. Asking for money for fanfic is out of line, and retarded, and shouldn't happen. But in that particular case I didn't feel like she needed to be driven out of fandom altogether beause she's an idiot. It doesn't make her less of an idiot, but. I don't know. That thing got way out of hand, I thought. To me it was one idiot asking for money, a few idiots being stupid enough to give it to her, and a LOT of idiots taking it upon themselves to point out the obviousness of her idiotness. (Not everyone who weighed in on the topic was an idiot, but there were some posts I saw that were just, wow, idiotic ( ... )

Can I just point out that I used the word idiot way more times in that post than I probably have in real life ever. WOW. Find a new word, Kelly!

I don't know man, I just... don't feel bad for her. Maybe this makes me a bad person? But I think that if you're going to be dumb and full of yourself enough to think you should get paid for fanfic, I think you *should* step away from fandom and get some perspective. And OMG who would even do something that dumb in a public post? My God, if you're going to make an ass of yourself, at least use a flock. and yes, fear of others seeing my asshattery is why all of my non-fic posts get locked now. Also, I think it would've been bad for fandom down the road. I mean, I hate making the slippery slope argument, because I find them silly on the whole but who's to say that, if paying for fic became a standard practice, the people who don't give a shit about fic might start being offended? Not likely, but I think anything that could make more Anne Rices needs to get smacked down hard.

Just gotta say right now, my FAVORITE example of the show actually putting an obvious nod to fandom in their show was the season... seven? i think episode of Buffy where for some reason they have to introduce everyone to someone (was it Faith? damn i can't remember now! grrr. hell someone will know), and who they are in relation to each other, and said person replied, "...has anyone here NOT slept with each other?" and the next cut was Xander and Spike looking at each other. HILARIOUS! (since Xander/Spike is a HUGE slash fic following). I mean, I DIED laughing, and hubby was like, "I don't get it." But I mean, c'mon, how AWESOME is that?!?!

:) OK, i'm done

I could write something long and involved in response to this but it all boils down to:

I hear ya. :)

I only discovered fanfiction online about a year ago. Before that, I was so desperate to read slash that I had been writing my own for 10 years or so (now I only read other people's, so I can actually read well written stuff): mostly based on AR's characters. So although I discovered this whole fantastic source of good stories, I really regret that her selfishness has prevented me from enjoying my first ever fandom properly.

It's so funny to me how one can go blissfully unaware of slash fiction for years and years and then they stumble across one thing that alerts them to slash and BOOM, th e whole world of slash opens to them. I swear to God, I watch a movie and i'm like "I bet there's slash for this." And then, two hours later, I've fou nd at LEAST one. LOL. It's too bad though that you stumbled across one of the very few fandoms where the creator was a dolt.

Am right there with you. Especially on the AR-bashing, as I am quite a big fan of her Vampire Chronicles (well... before they turned into what is imho crap, anyway). And there is some amazing fanfiction out there, regardless of whether she's okay with it or not. And there is nothing she can do about it, because once you create a universe that people relate to this much, once you're that successful? Well, your characters don't really belong only to you. People like this don't realise the truth that they'd be nothing without their audience - be it viewers of readers. You need an audience, or all storytelling is pointless, and to despise your readers so? deny them the right to use their imagination on your characters? is just plain stupid. But maybe dear Anne is just afraid some fanfic writers will do better than her... she's right to be afraid. But really, it's just... once you put your characters, your universe out there, it isn't only just yours. People read/watch it, and they all have a different take on it all. From the very moment ( ... )

Anne Rice is just a collosal idiot for the way she handled all that. I think ficangel is right. If she were a better writer herself, or had more self confidence, she probably wouldn't have had such a snit.

And I don't know if that's my kind of thing. I'm not su re I'd devote enough time to it to make it good. I'm gonna go check it out though, so I might wind up changing my mind. LOL. I do so love writing in Lee's voice though. Thanks for hte heads up.

And yay!!! Clerks!!!
