“fuck what Disney thinks, it’s 2011” Actually, you could make an argument that Disney still puts forth retro moral values; they haven't seemed to make much progress in their "modernizing the Disney princess thing." And I heard people freaked at the idea of Disney having a non-hetero family in one of their upcoming movies.
Not sure how it relates to Kingdom Hearts, but the game does still show off Disney's heteronormative formula.
Re: The Disney thing -- Naw, soon people will tell you that they like Disney very much, wish people would include more in their fanworks, etc. You're far from alone in that aspect. We've been over this maaaany times.
My main problem is that people are putting the blame exclusively on Disney. Square-Enix is at least partially to blame, too. The "fuck what Disney thinks" is from a post the tumblr maker made a few days ago. I don't really want to get into a big debate about Disney's values. I'm scared I'm going to piss someone off.
I know I'm not alone. I've gone through this comm's Disney tag. I'm just really tired of the fandom at large ignoring the Disney characters.
I guess it's just the fact that Square Enix fanboys think the company can do no wrong? I mean, there's people like that for Disney, but they're an oddly quiet minority in the KH fandom.
Also, I honestly don't see that changing anytime soon. In fandom, people focus what they're interested in, and that usually doesn't include Disney. All you can do is make fanworks with the Disney characters and give attention to those that do.
Admittedly, I probably lean towards the idea that Disney can do no wrong. I know it's not true, but I guess I'm just biased because I grew up on Disney and skipped that whole "DISNEY IS TEH SUXXORS" rebellious phase.
I just hope that if I ever get around to actually writing KH fanfiction, I don't forget the Disney love. I'm still kind of new to KH in general (only got into in October), so I'm not that confident. I'm also still relatively new to writing fanfic that isn't terrible. I won't call my recent writings goodfic, but compared to my pre-2009 stuff...
Oh, yes! If only Disney wasn't in the way with their big mean het-only ships, then AkuRoku would be blatant and canon! After all, just look at all of the canon gay ships Square has put in the Final Fantasy games without Disney to tell them no! Cecil and Rosa, Cloud and Tifa (or Aerith), Squall and Rinoa, Zidane and Garnet, Tidus and Yuna, Snow and Serah...
...Oh wait.
Yeah, sorry, I don't buy this junk about how it's all Disney's fault for censoring ALL TEH OBVIOUS GAY. Square has got a long history of doing the exact same thing. In fact, probably the closest thing they have to a canon non-het relationship is Fang and Vanille, and that's pretty much the antithesis of the "no-girls-allowed boy-love" thing some fans have going on.
YES. That is my main point. People accuse Disney of being to blame for any lack of gay ships in the game because there haven't been any gay couples in any Disney movies, but Square-Enix is just as bad!
Fang and Vanille are probably open to interpretation. It certainly very eyebrow-raising, but there doesn't seem to be anything too blatant. I haven't actually played any Final Fantasy games, so I can't say for sure.
Having played, I think Fang and Vanille can be open to interpretation, but they lay on the hints a lot heavier with those two than they have with any male/male relationship in other games (at least as far as I know). It's not as set in stone as, say, Snow/Serah, but there's definitely really strong hints.
Huh, how odd, I only discovered/read that blog yesterday.
As far as I read, the blog isn't just AkuRoku... it predominantly is, but s/he makes jokes about multiple other underage (and a few overage) characters, including female ones. I think most of the Xion bashing is tongue in cheek rather than genuine hate, though I see what you mean.
I must have missed the Disney bashing on the blog, but when I do see it it makes me sad. Saying any lack of canon gay pairing is Disney fault would be really daft too; after all Final Fantasy is hardly the most progressive in that respect either (FFXIII aside, I suppose).
Oh yes, and as regards to the appropriacy of the post... unless the rules have changed recently (despite the comm name) it allows any kind of KH fanworks related rants. :)
Yes, I know that it isn't just AkuRoku, just mostly. It makes me giggle because it is kind of weird how most of the people Axel interacts with are about a decade younger than he is. And I desperately hope the Xion-bashing is just tongue-in-cheek. I'm just not sure. I've never been very good at reading other peoples' intentions. The Disney bashing is a couple pages back.
Even FFXIII is open to interpretation. ...Why do I know this stuff? I never cared about Final Fantasy before Kingdom Hearts!
Thank you. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate or not.
I'm fairly sure it's just for humour's sake, and moreso insulting to Axel (portraying him as a predatory bastard, etc okay, not hugely wrong but you know...
I guess the blog's stance that AkuRoku is canon threw me off a bit.
...Is the Xion bashing out there REALLY that bad? I've made a post at hatedcharacters about her based on what the author of Fill The Moon said about her, but I don't know for sure.
Eheh... I haven't played FFXIII either... or ANY FF games for that matter.
As far as interviews go, my Japanese isn't that good, so I can't say for sure, nor would I know where to look.
Considering that apart from the ones that carried over from the Disney source material, there aren't any explicitly-stated canon relationships in KH, het or slash, I really don't think it's exclusively or really even mostly Disney's fault that *ship of your choice* isn't actually canon.
As someone noted above, the closest Squeenix appears to have ever come to a canon slash ship is Vanille/Fang, and that's still not explicitly canon (though it's got rather more subtext than a few of their actual canon pairings).

It makes my eyes roll when people are putting the entire blame on Disney for this sort of thing.
