Nah, I wouldn't take offence to someone who asserts their opinions respectfully. :)
Well, I get your points, but I'm still confused as to why she, who seems to understand literary analysis, has such a flat view of the character.
It's only natural that Roxas is the way he is, because his personality didn't start growing till the beginning of days. He is a character with very little life-experience, and no need for multiple motivations.
And it's such a pity, because I really like that fic, and then she goes and insults the canon.
It's like getting expensive but really delightful chocolate mouse, and eating it, and then discovering the eggs used were overdue...
I know, insulting the canon (or any character or anything, really) is a big turn-off to me in an Author's Notes. It's really a classic case of TMI. It makes me think of this one author who is actually one of the best fanfic authors I know, yet almost ruined an awesome fic for me by insisting on pointing out in her AN that she hated a specific character. It's just like, dude, let your fics speak for themselves.
I gotta say, though, that I also don't like it when authors gush in their ANs about how much they love a certain character. It unconsciously makes me want to check if they're being unintentionally biased toward that certain character while reading...
Well, I guess it depends on the fic, as when someone says 'I don't like this character' but writes this wonderful characterisation of it, it shows their maturity, doesn't it?
On the ther hand, I can get that you would want to approach a fic neutrally. It's partially why I feel a bit mixed about warnings and labels on fic.(I mean, maybe I've missed some really really incredible fic out there, that I didn't read because I find the pairing ridiculous)
I'm not a big fan of Days!Roxas, either. There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with liking it! There's also nothing wrong with going by a previous game's characterization, especially if that fits in the continuity of a fic you've had going on since before the game came out. Days is like CoM was when it came out: some people don't like it, some people love it, and some people are going to ignore its existence.
Also, I'm sorry that you're not a native speaker, but there's still nothing wrong with English lit references, especially since the author's a native English speaker. Personally, I love allusions to other works.
I actually don't care she dislikes days, or has a different characterisation or something like that. Nor do I even care that much about the references(as I said, I wanted to solve that by just telling her 'maybe you could explain these a bit more').
What pissed me off was that the author insults the canon-characterisation, and is unrespectful toward it. Esspecially because her characterisation reeks of self-insertism(Something I would've happily continue to ignore if it weren't for the fact she's so unrespectful toward the canon).
I know I didn't specify my points perfectly, so I'm not surprised you thought I was attacking her tastes rather then her behaviour. I apologise for that.
The thing about author's notes is that you know going in that they're going to be the author's personal opinions. Aaaand a new game in the series just came out. The author could just have easily said something about how much she adores Days.
I've read the fic in question, and, honestly, I don't see the self-insertion. If so, it's a far more honest, flawed insert than I've ever read before, because this Roxas is a little blond bundle of neuroses.
It's just another one of those situations where people are annoyed about their fic/characterization becoming completely incompatible with canon. I fully admit that this is why I hesitate to write more fic about the original Organization members before Birth by Sleep comes out. I agree with you, though, that it seems silly to complain about canon characterization in a fanfic. (That's what journals are for, after all.)
Well, I just felt it was really disrespectful toward canon.
I can understand having your fic not match up with the canon can be annoying, as I have to rewrite my own organisation fic completely(hadn't published anything yet, hence why), as the whole atmosphere just doesn't match up. But that's a risk you take, right? I mean, you don't hear me complaining that the Organisation is too nice. To be frank, I like it, but I still have to rewrite half my fic, and I knew I probably had to because the new game would alter my perception of canon.
It doesn't make it right, but it's actually incredibly common for authors in the KH fandom to openly dislike the canon. This doesn't stop them liking the characters. But a lot of people have got to the sort of point where they're worried what Square are going to do with those characters next. The fact that whatever they do is automatically canon can actually sting.
Roxas is a difficult one because we didn't have much, if any, characterisation for him before Days. I personally was lucky in that Days didn't go against my personal interpretation. Others aren't quite so lucky. Add that to the fact that a lot of people are annoyed that Days was made at all, especially the retcon elements. Add that to the rather repetitive gameplay and you have a lot of negative feelings amongst the fans - even the ones who aren't out for Xion's blood
( ... )
Well, to be honest, I am used to this sort of behaviour, because I'm from the Naruto fandom. And every week, it's the same old song 'this and this happend, the manga is ruined!' it got to the point that there were parody threads and similar popping up(add that to the fact Naruto is one of those manga that isn't flattered by a weekly format).
I guess it's a bit of case of fallen idol for me, as I respected this fic, and the author who wrote it, and had hoped she was above such behaviour...
I think it's more of a feeling that some people have that pandering to the base led to sequelitis it doesn't help that they retcon the whole game from canon afterwards. Leading to people like me wondering what on earth people DO remember from the past year.
