It's a little known fact that Even's mom never hugged him as a child. This lead him to make several bad choices, so he fell in with Ansem's crowd, and, well...
But really, fans seem to make out most (or all) of the Organization to be poor, misguided creatures. It seems to fit into the whole "Sora murdered them when all they were trying to do is get their heart back!!" etc etc...
He had to read himself his own bedtime stories, and get cookies from a nearby bakery. :( This makes it sound like he was going to grow up to be an IRS Agent, A La Stranger Than Fiction... This whole SCIENCE thing probably came from reading Frankenstein at a young age.
My view on OrgXIII is so skewered after all the fanon I've seen. I tend not to take them very seriously.
Heck, Vexen was a douche even to the rest of the Organization, especially the newer members. This may or may not be related to the reasons Marluxia had for telling Axel to stab/explode him.
Much as I cried over Vexen's death, I am fully aware that HE, ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE IN THE ORGANIZATION, IS A TOTAL BASTARD for exactly the reasons you listed. Not to mention his Somebody TOTALLY BACKSTABBED ANSEM. I mean, geez, I don't have much love for the guy either, but SERIOUSLY?
I guess some people have a hard time with complex characters. Yes, Vexen is a devious bastard, but he was really trying to hold the Organization together and trying to stop Marluxia and Larxene from taking over. I mean, his motives for trying to wreck Marluxia's plans might be questionable, and he might not be as big of a bastard as, say, Axel, but he's still a bastard.
Heck, Vexen was probably one of the Org members who was actually somewhat okay with having no heart, if only because that pesky conscience wouldn't get in the way of his experiments anymore.
I mean, seriously-- what do you think he was doing all that time? It definitely wasn't making daisy chains or ice sculptures (unless they were made out of real people).
In any case, I really don't understand why people seem to always do this to their favorite characters. I love Vexen BECAUSE he is a prissy sociopathic douchebag, not in spite of it. It's okay to love assholes for being assholes, people.
Somebody forgot the 'amoral' in 'tragic amoral genius babies' again, didn't they? *lesigh*
People who aren't comfortable with characters who don't fit in tidy little boxes should probably go find something a bit simpler to enjoy. I hear Dick and Jane doesn't require any advanced moral thinking.
