I don't know RENT and so I don't know if this is a particular character reference or what, but I've seen Axel with a latino based surname before and it worked, so I don't see the issue there.

The Latino-based surname itself isn't the problem--"Marquez" refers to Mimi Marquez, an exotic dancer with HIV. She hooks up with Roger, a broody and (initially) apathetic musician who also has HIV.

Since the author shoved Axel into Mimi's place and... sort of... replaced Roger with Roxas, you can guess what's going to happen.

Okay, I laughed at the Axel!Mimi thing. I blame the "lol, his hips don't lie" fandom joke. Of their casting, I guess Roxas!Roger is the only slightly feasible one (and even that's pushing it). Well, actually, if Marluxia's Benny, maybe that kinda works too... /rambling.

What the HELL. They've screwed up RENT and KH in one fell swoop. It's not a RENT-anything if you leave out all the poverty, non-conformist/artist attitude, wealth polarization, HIV-positive mindset, and drug addiction.

Yes, Maureen is pushy and kinda self-centered, but she does care about her friends, her girlfriend, and Mark. Kairi is a loyal, determined and sweet girl. They are not bitches. Stop screwing up their characters.

And Axel!Mimi... *Laughs to death* Roxas!Roger is only slightly less funny (can't imagine him writing any music that's not... angry and apathetic).

BTW, since Marluxia is Benny, does that mean Larxene is Alison? And who the hell did they cast for April?

I don't think Marluxia is Benny, actually--according to Sora, he "dropped by Marluxia's cafe and he gave us some free food!" So Marluxia, if we inject logic into it, owns the Life Cafe.

But considering what the author's done with everything else concerning RENT, I'm not sure if she even knows that it's CALLED the Life Cafe.

Definitely. I would have left this alone entirely if the summary hadn't clearly said this was a KH version of RENT.
