On Roxas' Personality

I don't get it.

How does Roxas = 'asshole'? In the entire game, the closet to such a thing is his "no one would miss me" line, and even then, that's one line. Given his behavior in KH2 and Final Mix, he never struck me as that extreme. Granted, his Organization self doesn't get much screen time, but looking at the screencaps for 358/2 days and the ( Read more... )

I see Roxas being a little terse with people and he has a temper. Org!Roxas is antisocial. TT!Roxas is somewhat distant, but more in that sense that something's off and he's a bit distracted trying to figure it out. In both cases, he can be a little bastard if the situation calls for it. I think one of my favorite scenes early in the game is when at first kneels when Seifer tells him to and then makes a dash for a weapon when Seifer's off guard.

It might be because most of the Organization is viewed as unfeeling cold bastards, and since Roxas was "originally" part of the Organization, he has to fit in and not be the little kid who's picked on.

Alternatively, the whole weepy!uke might come through his Twilight Town thing, because a lot of people think he's "emo" and "depressed". :/

I'd be inclined to make a "All Nobodies act like Assholes" argument.

No emotions = No control over correct portrayal thereof.

To suggest that Roxas IS an asshole would suggest he has the capacity to be cruel by choosing to react negatively.

True, but remember that Roxas is a special-case nobody. Because of his ties with Sora he isn't as emotionless as the rest, I guess, or at least that's what I've seen implied. But even if that's not really the case, this rant is more based on his behavior in the actual game more than anything else. Then again, there's so little known about Roxas outside the Twilight Town simulation and at the end of the game that there are a lot of things that aren't explained, but it just seems silly to me personally for Roxas to use a lot of swear words, be a prick to everyone on sight, even his supposed best friend, and be all broody.

But don't you know? Roxas shoulders 98.3% of the angst of the Organization!

Yeah, I see Organization Roxas as quiet, slightly irritable, extremely removed, and very COLD. Not exactly mean, but obviously with a chip on his shoulder. Twilight Town Roxas, on the other hand...is probably a little bit harder to write because that personality was created for him by DiZ.

Roxas =/= jerk. Roxas = complex character. There's a difference.

But then, as was posted above, this probably delves into the argument that the Organization can't act like jerks because they have no emotions...and that's just way too much a headache-in-waiting to try to explain.

Well, my main issue was, as I've mentioned in other comments, that some exaggerate the portrayal to a point where he's not only cold, but also almost psychotic, insults everyone with slews of cusses, and is just generally... a ball of negativity. But as you said, Roxas is complex, so characterizing him properly can be tough.

Roxas in Org strikes me as being very bitter little brat, actually. There is another referance to his character. It's in a story that came in a book that was released in Japan with Final Mix +. Roxas acts very bitter and cold, even to Axel. The story starts with Axel waking up Roxas after he gets back from Castle Oblivion. Axel does so by standing over Roxas, causing them to bump heads when Roxas wakes up. Roxas is actually very rude to Axel, even telling him that they're not friends when Axel says something along the lines of 'is that anyway to greet a friend.' (I don't remember his exact line.) I don't think Roxas would be an asshole every waking moment, but he definitely can be one.

Yeah, I have no quips with bitterness and arrogance to a degree, but when people throw it over the edge and make him snap at anyone and anything and even threaten to just kill people on sight... er, I just can't see it. And I've seen portrayals of him like that, too.
