This one's for the girls
Hello, longtime lurker and big fan of this place. You guys have helped this poor boy keep his sanity in the often terrifying Kingdom Hearts Fandom.
As the recent theme of the week seems to be the poor maligned women of Kingdom Hearts, I felt the need to add my two cents. Warning, lots of spoilers and some harsh language ahead!
I would just like to state that the women in Kingdom Hearts are not freaking weak! Now I understand that there could be more female characters in the game (And as a guy who loves deadly women I certainly wouldn’t mind a few more of them) however, the women we get are all very strong. Let’s just look at a few examples.
1) Mulan: Here is a character I’ve read a lot of complaining about. People like to claim that they made the only female ally in KHII useless, and they are somewhat correct right up until she’s stops pretending to be Ping. See, I like to think there’s a nice little message in there, where Mulan isn’t a great fighter until she stops pretending to be a man, and is honest about who she is. Then she turns into a master fighter with a kickass limit! I love the fact that she is a better fighter as a woman than when she tries to be a man. Too bad a lot of people seem to have given up on her right away, and never realized just how powerful a fighter she could be.
2) Belle: She elbowed Xaldin, six spear “One bad mutha f*cker!” Xaldin in the gut, and made off with the rose. When I got to that part, my friend, who had no knowledge of Kingdom Hearts beyond watching me play, literally cheered her on and said that she was awesome.
3) Larxene: No one who is described with the words Ninja, Lightning, and Dominatrix, has been, can, or will ever be described as weak.
4) Ariel: Freaking torpedo with breasts. She was slaughtering heartless while I was still figuring out which way was up
5) Maleficent: She got the most powerful villains in Disney (one of which was a god!) and Riku to serve her, and conquered Hollow Bastion. Smart, deadly, manipulative, and can turn into a bloody Dragon, this is one tough lady.
6) Queen Minnie: Here is what happened during my time with her majesty:
Me: man this sucks I hate protection missions.
(Enter throne room full of fifty thousand heartless)
Me:…well, I’m boned. *stabslashcure* Hey, is that a reaction command?
Minnie: *Flips out and kills shit*
Me:… I’ll be in the corner emasculated your majesty; please feel free to continue rocking on with your bad self.
7) Kairi: She was willing to fight despite not having any real special powers, training, or until the end even a weapon. Yet she jumped off a balcony into heartless to try and save Sora, and was ready to fight Saix with her bare hands. That takes true courage. She also found Riku, and kept him from running away to wallow in despair, that’s a kind of power that you can’t get with a weapon or training, that kind of power comes from within. Mess with her boys and she’ll kick your ass
8) Tifa: I swear, if I even have to explain this one…SHE TOOK A SWING AT SEPHERIOTH!
9) Aerith: She could keep guys like Leon and Cloud in line with a look and a smile. That’s something an army of heartless couldn’t do.
10) Yuffie: Her weapon is bigger that my little sister, and she throw it around like it’s nothing. Also, ninja. That makes her badass by default. I also enjoy her “don’t take crap” attitude.
11) Nala: Did anyone miss the scene where she tackled Scar to save Sora, Donald, and Goofy? Not to mention she looked like she was holding her own against Simba. Hell, if she wasn’t pregnant she would have probably helped take down that massive Heartless.
12) Tinkerbell: Best. Summon. Ever.
13) Namine: She defied both the Organization and DiZ to help Sora and Roxas, and in the end was willing to fight by Kairi’s side against Saix with her bare hands. And don’t forget she’s the one who busted Kairi out of prison, and then helped everyone but Riku and Sora escape TWTNW. Factor in her power over memories, and this is a strong girl who is willing to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of others.
Wow, that turned out longer than I planned, and there are still more strong girls in this game. While there could be more female characters (you can never have too many kickass women in my opinion) the ones we are given are extremely powerful, wise, compassionate, and deadly. Don’t shortchange the girls, lest I hand you over to Larxene.
On a totally unrelated note, I wonder why more fanfics don’t make use of Kairi and Namine’s artistic connection. Both are artists in their own way, Namine with drawing and Kairi with jewelry, yet this connection between the two is never really used that I’ve seen.
