Your P.S. note is win, just like the rest of this rant. =D
I hate hate hate song fics, because half most of the time, people writing them have no idea how to write them correctly. I wrote a songfic ages ago, and I deleted it off my computer, the 'net and everywhere else.
If one is going to write a songfic, or mention a song in a story in any way, then don't have the characters singing it, etc. If I write a story based on a song (which I've done and now I can't find and it makes me very sad) it's just using the theme of the song. Not once is a lyric of the song mentioned in the story.
The idea of Lexaeus singing "Hollaback Girl" will now torment me. And I mean that in the best way possible. <3
Yeeeeah... I haven't read fanfic in a long time, but I usually avoided songfics for this very reason. However, I never did come across a songfic where the character actually was singing the song. Ouch. Usually there were just italicized lyrics between appropriate paragraphs.
To me, characters that are not musically oriented singing = comedy. I don't think I'd be able to take any story with Sora/Riku/Merlin/whoever singing their love seriously.
Truuuue. But singing their love, no. And for some reason when I picture Sora singing I have an image of him getting on his knees and singing really off-tune instead of nicely like he did in Atlantica. XD;
O lawd, I was thinking that when I wrote it, but I was like "ehhh nobody will notice." XD ...I can't even think of how that would happen but now I'm laughing out loud. XDDD
XD The mental image of Sora doing that is absolutely adorable. Like that last song they sang as a goodbye to Ariel and everyone. Hurt the ears but was sweet..in that they cared.
It's even worse when songfics are made with Japanese songs D: Apart from telling your readers you're probably a total Jafanese, you destroy all the rhythm of the fic by putting awful paragraphs of recondite syllables. How am I supposed to know if the lyrics you picked fits the character in any way?

I've actually done that once (as in put the whole song in its original version - as there was no English version and I felt guilty about using a fan translation) back in my fanbrat days...never doing that again. * gets bricks thrown at her *

..The world only knows how upset I was when Kiss the Girl didn't make it into the game. XD
...And randomly, just because I've forver tarnished by fics into seeing /'s as pairings. That would be one STRANGE pairing.
