In chats, I have a tendency to leave out capitalization in a lot of cases [exempting most proper nouns and the personal I], and occasionally use chat terms like "brb" or "wtf," although I sometimes use those out of chats just because they amuse me [but never in a proper narrative/official context]. I try to otherwise keep my grammar and spelling up, because it's still the written word, intarweb or no.

I agree! I'm an English major and seeing that sort of thing in chats makes me weep. It's not that hard to type correctly; it actually takes more work for me to type as badly as I see people type.

During chats, I tend to speak like I usually do, but often I make typos. Usually I might correct them, or if they can tell what I was trying to say, I leave it. However, the internet isn't an excuse to use bad grammar and spelling. D:

I think, actually, that it ought to be practice. Considering in order to communicate, you're forced to write, it helps develop your communication/writing skills. ^^;

Like levikitty said, some sayings like BRB or OMG are kind of fun, but enuff with talkin liek this, k cuz i dun git how u can read liek that. D: (That was terribly painful to type.)

I'm a grammar Nazi and proud of it. One sounds rather obnoxious when tiping leik dis. A few of the acronyms are nice, cute, and useful (read: brb, omg, wtf), but omg i 8 a gr8t pi! is kind of...I want to hurt you badly, let's just say that. Is it pi as in 3.14 or pie as in sugary goodness in a pan?

I can tolerate it for short periods of time in conversation, but if it's ever used in stories...

You're not picky. You're being completely reasonable. I admit to making mistakes and sometimes leaving words spelled incorrectly... But it's usually because my spelling isn't up to snuff. At least use proper grammar, it's something everyone can do. I completely agree with you. I find myself having to turn away when someone approaches me with such butchery of the English language.

Short hand and acronyms are okay to see in IM's and chats I guess... But the moment I see a fic like that, I bail. So, it seems you have many people who agree with you.^_^
