I am almost embarrassed to say I have never read anything by Jose Saramago. He is one writer I have been meaning to read ever since I can remember, but just haven't done so. Since you are more than familiar with his work I'd love to ask you which one of his novels you would recommend I start with. I have a copy of "Blindness" sitting on my bookshelf.

He's so amazing. I loved the scene in the graveyard, with shepherd who switched the gravestones. Blindness is, I think, my favorite, but he is such a stunning, effective writer who can make whole worlds slide and shift, always with such a powerful, specific humanity in his characters.
