Even if she tried, Martha’s sure she can never forget how this whole mess started. The Doctor--no, John Smith--was with the Secretary of Education, attending the dedication ceremony for the new museum aboard some spaceship, and she had agreed to house-sit for him. They lived in the same flat complex, so it wasn’t that much of a hastle to go over once a day to water the plants and make sure everything was in order

“I don’t know how he can live in this mess,” she muttered, straightening his bookshelves, unable to help herself. Seeing the watch fob tucked away behind a book, she picked it up and ran her fingers along the engraved surface. One more month, and he could open this fob and they could leave Caprica behind. It wasn’t that different from Earth, but she still didn’t feel fully comfortable here.

A high pitched noise reached her ears, causing the hair at the back of her neck to stand up. Rushing over to the window, she found herself momentarily transfixed by the sight before her.

Two large mushroom-shaped clouds rose in the distance near Caprica City, their yellowish clouds already starting to spread over the blue sky. Her breath froze in her chest as she watched it start to move towards the town of Alexandra, where she and the Doctor were living. The sound of people rushing in the hallway snapped her out of her daze and she realized she needed to get out of there before it was too late.

Grabbing the watch, she ran out of the flat as fast as she could, not bothering to go to hers in her rush to get to where she had hidden the TARDIS. The streets were pure chaos, with everybody shoving, trying to get where they thought they would be safe. Martha found herself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of noise, unable to distinguish one word from the other as the crowd roared around her.

Fighting her way against the tide, she finally made it to the small storage shed where the TARDIS was stored.

“Come on, come on,” she muttered, fingers fumbling as she tried to unlock the door. The key slipped out several times before she finally slipped it in and unlocked the door. Pushing it open, she rushed inside and closed it behind her before moving towards the center console. Her hands shaking, she quickly pressed the buttons she remembered the Doctor showing her all those months ago, right before he had disguised himself as a human. He had said that it was for emergencies, and she figured that nukes going off on their doorstep would be sufficient.

“Please work,” Martha prayed, pressing the final button. The TARDIS lurched around her, throwing her against the raised chair. Clutching it tightly, she closed her eyes as the ship moved to the coordinates she had just plugged in.

Finally, it stopped lurching and the sound ceased. Opening her eyes, she brushed the loose hair out of her eyes as she carefully stood up on shaky legs. Walking to the door, she carefully opened it and peered outside.

Acrid, smoke-filled air caused her to cough, tears filling her eyes and partially obscuring her vision. Blinking them away, she took a hesitant step out of the TARDIS and looked at the landscape around her. A sickly-yellow haze covered the sky, casting an eerie glow over the mountainous landscape. Through a crack in the trees, Martha could make out the ruined skyline of one of Caprica’s cities. A drone filled the air, causing her to look up and take a step back as two ships flew overhead in a grid pattern. Turning away from the hellish landscape before her, Martha fled back inside. She needed to gather herself, mentally regroup, and then plan. She needed to figure out what had happened and then find a way to get in contact with the Doctor. She needed to get in contact with any survivors, since there would probably be strength in numbers in this scenario. And, most importantly, she needed to find a place to hide the TARDIS until she had a way off of here. Taking a deep breath, she walked into the bowls of the TARDIS and got to work.
