Thoughts on HP Lovecraft

I've recently started reading a collection of 20 of Lovecraft's short stories.  I've curently made it through two and a half.  Here are some thoughts in no particular order.
  • Lovecraft is blatantly and unapologetically racist.  I actually had to stop and see when they were all published.  Ah yup.  20s.  That'd be why.

The Lovecraft genre is REALLY creepy for me. A lot takes place in rural New England. I've been there (heck LIVED there) and at night it can get REALLY REALLY creepy.

Purple prose? I'm not familiar with that term.

It's usually used in romance. It refers to an overabundance of flowery adjectives (and euphemisms, in romance) rather than straightforward prose.
