Band weaving selvedge lesson

On my last post, a couple of people were interested in learning how I manage even selvedges when I band weave, so I promised them pics and here they are.

This trick is leaving a loop of weft thread and not pulling the weft tight until you've beat the next shed.  This trick was passed on to me by hunnic_scourge  years ago. I think it originated with petitsyrah .

nice demonstration!

Some folks just pull it as tight as they can, (with or without this loop technique) but you can end up with something that feels like a board, and not so nice for sewing on clothing. It also doesn't make it any easier to keep the width even.

Thanks!

I don't pull as tight as I can because then warp threads will lay on top of each other if there is any problem at all with the tension.

Ooh. Now I feel sort of dumb, because of course that will totally solve the issue I've been having.

Thanks for sharing! Now I need to rewarp my loom.

I found the idea in an obscure 1970's off-loom weaving pamphlet years ago and thought it would be a great way to solve the problems I was having. The pamphlet was for making ponchos and purses using various off-loom weaving techniques, all of which looked very shaggy.

It's a very handy technique and has made all the difference in the appearance of my woven products since I started using it. Thanks!

Thank you very much -- not only a wonderful demonstration, but (since I'm a technical writer and see these things) very well explained.

no, considering how much bad crap that I've read (especially where I work in the software industry)... Thank YOU.

I have a huge pile of old weaving magazines from the 50s to 70s I can bring up some time if folks want to look them over. It may inspire me to do something with my little table top loom.
