Today is International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, did you know? I'm quite tickled by how it falls just after my birthday, as though it were just one in a week-long seminar series called Celebrate Aspects of khalinche's Identity Week. The Highlands and Islands Society of London is having a ceilidh on Saturday, after all - maybe tomorrow there could be a ( Read more... )

Oh, didn't realise you wouldn't be there! You'll be missed.

Thanks for this post - I don't think I have time to write one myself (I'll be at the pub instead, whee!) but the stuff about bisexual invisibility and stereotyping and the lack of decent language always bears repeating. At least until something in this culture starts to shift.

Yeah, I'm sad to miss it - I'm going round to a friend's for a looong-overdue catch-up and I've already had to reschedule once so I don't want to let her down again. I might pop in after if I leave hers early enough. But I was chatting to new-Chris there last night, and very cheered by his enthusiasm for it, ("I'm working the day-shift, but I'm totally going to stick around for it after I finish"). I figure I spend enough time being bisexual in the Pembury anyway...

Arthur Rimbaud? Really? We studied his poems in 1st year French and I don't remember anyone mentioning that he liked girls... Oh, right, that would be the invisibility part. It's a shame this is a metaphorical rather than literal invisibility, because that would totally make up for it, even if it lead to crap jokes about being able to use this ability for secretly perving on people twice as much as a straight person would.

It would be pretty fantastic, you have to admit. You could totally go in the changing rooms of the gender you fancy! Oh, wait...

I'm loving the idea that being bi would grant invisibility powers. yay!

Do you have to be out and bi? Because I am envisioning people just being *pifft* gone, when they were there a minute ago. You'd be out of the closet by virtue of your disappearance.

If you roll with the Kinsey scale of sexuality approach to these matters, would you have a graduated scale of invisibility? Where if you were a zero (totally attracted only to members of the opposite (an opposite?) persuasion) or a six (totally attracted only to members of the same persuasion), you're completely opaque? But if you're a three you're completely invisible? And if you're a 1,2,4, or 5 you're graduated, or ombred, or something?

The physics of bisexual invisibility would an optics professionals neverending enquiry.

Ooh, that reminds me. We should ceilidheilidheilidh some time. But probably not Saturday, because I'm not from the Highlands or Islands. Next Friday perhaps?

Yes indeed! I don't want to go to the HISL one because it's very expensive, the venue is less than amazing and I hear quite a lot from both of the singers too because one of them is in our choir and the other used to be. But I'm usually up for some birlin' (or other seagoing wooden vessels, for that matter). I will keep my ear to the ground for the ominous thump of ceilidh-ing feet.

Actually, I'm disqualified due to not being bi - and having been out drinking three nights straight already, for that matter - but I have far too much of a hard time resisting smartarse comments. Hope it's a good evening! Also, you should come to my house some time soon, where I can make food at you.

That would be grand! I should also repost your flatmate-wanted ad.

I was in the P last night too, and I have a funny feeling I'll be going there fairly often in future too. Can't keep me out of that place. (I don't seem to have made it along on Sunday in aaaages, though, which I should try to rectify).

Yes please - the room's still free, and the last person who was interested seems to have gone silent.

You were in the pub on Tuesday? Bah, I must have missed you somehow. Never mind, I'm sure we'll run into each other soon :)
