Like most of you, I've been horrified by what has been happening in Gaza in the last few weeks, not to mention the months of blockades of food and medical supplies which foreran the current military action. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza was emerging months before the bombardment of civilians: the water, sewage, healthcare and food-distribution systems were close to (or at and beyond) breakdown due to the blockade.

An unbiased political commentator might ask whether the invasion was an excessive response to sporadic rocket launches, or a cynical measure to forestall TV pictures of starvation and disease behind barbed wire.

Thanks for posting this, it gave me the necessary shove to get my credit card out for DEC.

Arg, BBC! If the DEC say they can get aid in, what the heck business of the BBC is it to say "ooh, that looks awfully awkward for us difficult, better not try".

That's in the "dog ate my homework" league of bad excuses. It may be rather cynical of me to say so, but it sounds as if the BBC are having to maintain a vaguely pro-Israel stance (i.e. not drawing even more attention to the devestation the Israeli miliary has caused) for one reason or another.

Now that I know where there's a non-political aid fund, I'll be donating, but later when I'm home from work and on a computer which I trust with my bank details.
