Challenge [241]: Ghost Stories
Title: Big Words
Word Count: 260
Notes: Mostly a KHII: FM throwback, though there might be a bit of Fridge Horror (YMMV) if you've played through BBS. No spoilers, though.
They all had their favorites.
"And when they finally stopped the car and looked outside, hanging on the door handle was a rusted hook."
Stories so familiar they were no longer scary.
"'Did you know...' said the skeleton, 'that skeletons have very long arms?'"
But tonight, Wakka was trying a new one.
"To this day," he finished, leaning in so the flickering fire's light cast eerie shadows on his face, "the ghost still wanders the world in his suit of armor, vowing revenge against the man who killed him."
Kairi just shook her head. "That's not scary, Wakka. That's sad."
"Speak for yourself!" Selphie squealed, pressing her face against Tidus' shoulder. He looked none too happy with the situation. "I don't want any ghost knight coming around here looking for me!"
Sora grinned, hands behind his head. "Don't worry, Selphie," he asserted, "I'll protect you."
"Yeah, right." That got a laugh out of Riku. "Big words when you can't even beat me."
"Can too!" Sora was on his feet in a heartbeat, wooden sword drawn.
"Oh yeah?" Riku mirrored his movements, grinning. "Prove it."
"I will!" Stories of ghostly knights and revenge were forgotten for the moment, and the three still sitting laughed and cheered as they watched the score become 52 to 1.
Years later, in a dusty canyon graveyard stuck in perpetual twilight, as the knight without a voice professed his hatred and drew his battered Keyblade from the ground, Sora wondered if maybe Riku had been right and his words back then hadn't been entirely too big.
