Challenge: [095] Poison
Title: No one is Immune

Spoilers: Contains pretty big spoilers for up to halfway through KHII. If you are past the big battle at Hollow Bastion you should be safe.

The thousands of Heartless and Nobodies standing before Mickey did not scare him. He felt no fear, not hesitation, no mercy for the things who had taken his friend from him. And that terrified him.
Of all the paths darkness could take into a beings heart, revenge was one of the most dangerous. It always seemed so right, so justified, and what kind of friend would he be if he let Goofy’s death go unavenged.
A thousand memories welled up to remind him why this was wrong. Memories of how revenge had twisted Ansem the Wise and countless others across the multiverse. Memories of Goofy, that sought to remind him that this was not what his friend would have wanted. Strongest of all were the memories of Minnie, Donald, Sora, and all the other people he would be letting down if he gave in now. Yet one image supplanted them all, the memory of Goofy’s broken body lying on the rocks of Hollow Bastion.
In the end, it was pure luck that saved Mickey. Seeing Goofy round the corner, seconds before the king would have unleashed his hatred on the heartless below, brought relief to Mickey’s heart. He was ashamed to realize that his friend’s safety was only a part of why he was relived, and that the greater reason was that he had been pulled back from the brink.
Before the battle at Hollow Bastion, Mickey had always assumed that a strong heart could make you immune to darkness’s poisonous caress. He realized that day that no one could develop an immunity to darkness, only build up a tolerance. In the end, everyone had their limit, it was just a question of whether they would be pushed to it. That day Mickey had been pushed to his, and escaped by luck alone. From then on he could only yearn for the days when his enemy’s motivations had been a mystery.
