Challenge: [095] Poison
Title: The Lesser of Three Evils
Word count: 653
Spoilers: For KH2 more than any other game.
Notes: Kairi-centric. Who knows what might have happened to Kairi while she was running away from Axel and before Saix caught her? Something like this, perhaps.
She was playing Portal Roulette again- she knew one had been opened by her pursuer, one by her mysterious helper. With no way to tell whose was whose, all she could do was pick one and hope she landed somewhere away from Axel.
The mist-shrouded caves and the wispy little balls of... she didn't know what, but at least they didn't hurt her, were hardly comforting.
She felt cold and tired. Only fear kept her heavy limbs moving.
Fear and the whispering.
Kairi hadn't seen anything. Every time she turned to look behind her, there was nothing there- she could swear there were eyes on her back... voices.
Naminé... Naminé...
Kairi pursed her lips, glaring at nothing, and kept walking.
Five tunnels later she was lost. She was also hungry, and aggravated.
She'd had enough.
"Okay! That's it! Whoever you are, come where I can see you."
Silence.
Then laughter.
She flinched, shivered, and put her back against a wall. ...Maybe the challenge had been a bad idea.
See us?
Once we had form and heft... now we are nothing.
Nothing but voices to those with ears to hear us.
Like you, Naminé.
"That's not my name," she murmured, but she knew it. That boy- the time she'd fainted. He'd called her Naminé.
Laughter again.
This one has spirit.
I say we keep her, send the traitors a message.
Something poked at her hair- then curled into it, touching her ear.
Kairi let out a little scream and pulled away from the wall, turning.
A vine.
It grew as she watched, becoming longer, thicker, and developing thorns, all the while it moved towards her as if seeking the sun.
Something curled lightly about her wrist and she flinched, looking down.
Another vine.
Kairi extracted her arm carefully from the plant and moved away. Vines uncurled from all sides, reaching, but slowly, and she was able to move through them without touching any.
The laughter followed her as she made her way through the tunnel, hoping, praying for Pluto, her helper- she'd even take Axel at this point. She wanted out of here.
The tunnel widened into a chamber and Kairi took the last few steps at a run. She’d finally gotten away from the vines.
But she’d found the flowers.
'Step into my parlor,' said the Venus to the fly.
...That isn't how the saying goes.
Perfume, sweet, cloying and with an undertone of sickness assaulted her nose- filled her mouth, choking her. Kairi cupped her hands over her face but it didn't help. She coughed- breathed in by accident. She felt dizzy... poison- it had to be poison.
Good night, sweet Princess.
Isn't there something about flights of angels in there?
They laughed.
She was going to die with their laughter in her ears. She coughed, tears streaming from her eyes- the world tilted and she fell.
The next thing she knew... something was burning.
"Fricken' Nobodies, always trying to remodel. They're not dead- they weren't alive, and they still get to hang around my place. That's what I get for having an 'open door' policy. You don't need a membership to get in, you just- excuse me, what's this?"
A hand brushed her face- smearing something. Kairi smelled ashes.
"Well hello, gorgeous, what's your name?"
She tried to move and couldn’t- she felt so heavy.
“You’re not dead right now, but I can wait- it’s no big deal and... you’re the Keyblade kid’s chick! What a nice surprise-”
“Hey Hades- you know that saying about fighting fire with fire?”
“More Nobodies,” the voice muttered. Kairi heard footsteps moving away from her- the heavy drag of cloth on stone. “Yeah- you get burnt even quicker.”
“That’s why I don’t do it.”
“What? Hey! You-”
“Time to go now,” said a voice by her ear. Arms lifted her and she felt cold- a portal.
Okay, maybe Axel wasn’t so bad after all.
