Oh, God, there is so much stuff in Cerebus. My kids could probably tell you much more than you want to know. I do remember that Lord Julius, the "character who seems to be played by Groucho Marx" is Groucho, more or less: Julius was G.M.'s real name.
The series is heavy on misogyny, or becomes so later.
Read everything until Church and State II, then skip the rest.
Cerebus did start out as nothing more than a parody comic, with Cerebus as Conan and taking the piss out of everything that was then popular, which explains the Moon Roach, which is a pisstake on the Doug Moench/Bill Sienkievitch Moon Knight. But you can see the art improving by leaps and bounds and the stories getting more serious later in the volume.
The second volume has lost most of the parody but nothing of the humour and is one complete story.
