Park Chanyeol has worked five years as a Calcutec - a person trained to process and encrypt data in their subconscious mind - for the quasi-governmental System in the post-apocalyptic Seoul. He's a dedicated employee with no close friends and no contact to his family, having been hired straight from high school; he enjoys little things like coffee in the morning and finding individualistic details about people he comes by. His life is fine. A little dull, but fine.
One ordinary day he's given the task to follow a young man named Byun Baekhyun, a university student of his age. Byun Baekhyun likes to go to karaoke with friends, lives at a school dormitory, and leads a harmless routinely life in all the possible ways - save for the books he reads alone at the library.

Everything goes smoothly until one morning Chanyeol gets a startling visit and a warning to not continue working on the case. Suddenly cast in a series of odd events Chanyeol becomes aware of how cruel the job he's become involved in really is.
Now, first of all, the original 100-page draft was, seriously, written in exactly two weeks on Notepad. No, I'm not kidding. I woke up on a pretty Sunday morning and had this idea I thought was fabulous, exquisite, brilliant, and it needed to be written down, but because I've sort of been out of ideas and inspiration for ages, I figured I'd just type down my initial idea for a scene and let it rot somewhere... Except that in the first eight hours I'd written a little over ten pages, a long continuous scene, and had more coming, and in the end, decided to write the whole thing into the same file. If I had an ass made of steel and knew the remedy to completely prevent achy shoulders and painful wrists, this would've been ready much faster. I even pulled an all-nighter, the first (intentional and proper one, not one caused by insomnia spent in bed rolling and being pissed off) in a few years, and pretty much wrote continuously for some 20 hours. I spoke so much about this on my facebook that I bet I annoyed a lot of people while also getting a request to post a link later (hi, Andrew) and a plea to print this shit out for a present. Dear mother of all good things.
When I began I didn't even intend to make this a 100% accurate and true to the original two books I've based the ideas on. Some details might be a little off, some more than a little, but that's kind of what I wanted, in the end; a story, not too much a replica. My beta (thanks dear <3) has not read the two books prior to this, so yeah, it's been through a test run on someone who has no idea. If it's worked and passed, I hope it's not as much crazy gibberish it could've been.
"Hard-Boiled Wonderland & the End of the World" by Haruki Murakami was written in the 80s, while "The Gone-Away World" by Nick Harkaway is a 21st century title; since I've mixed up ideas from the two, I believe I can use the following excuse to get away with all my mistakes. It's been over twenty years since Murakami wrote his book, so obviously the world has changed since the setting of his story, and Harkaway describes a world after apocalypse, one into which this story is set in, after years of the events of the title in a whole different country. There. I've excused myself.
Finally, I must mention this story came to be after I'd spent countless of hours sobbing in a corner over how I can't write either of my number one OTPs (that'd be jongkey and hunhan) despite a million scenes I've played in my head. A very close person even went through the trouble of bringing me coffee and donuts to a whole different part of the city on a rainy day after I'd sobbed about my inability to create for a day on facebook. Having said that, I've come to like baekyeol a lot more than I originally did during this whole process.

Updates will be every Sunday approximately 19:00GMT on AFF, and with slight delay on LJ.
