*Riku was already moving towards Sora when he vanished through the portal; seeing Kairi running towards it, he positions himself between Kairi and the portal and chokes out a single word.*

*grabs his wrist and tries to pull him with her, then lets go, staggering a few steps to the brink of the portal. Dark wisps begin to envelop her*

Riku...come on! Together!

*Riku can't believe what he's seeing - his mind is numb, and he can't think of a single explanation for the events that have transpired. He watches as one of his greatest fears, Kairi surrounded by Darkness, is reality.*

Why...

*Riku takes a step towards the portal, and at that exact moment it begins to rapidly close.*

[dawntide]

*reaches out a hand to him*

*Riku returns the gesture...but he doesn't feel the warmth of Kairi's hand against his own. The portal vanishes, and the space that Kairi's blue eyes occupied only an instant ago is now filled with the familiar sight of the beach.

Riku's arm falls limply to his side, and after a few heartbeats he falls to his knees.*
