All Hail the KevinQuad

Hello! I didn't actually mention any of this, of course, but about a month ago my computer crippled itself beyond repair, so I built a new one. (Well... Brian built a new one, while I fetched him food and offered helpful suggestions like "hey what was that noise that sounded bad did something break oh God." I fail at being a nerd, but, as always, ( Read more... )

Turns out it's not a Quicktime problem. All video is currently wonky. Investigation is underway.

That's all well and fine, but how fast can it download new music for Christi?

Faster than ever before, believe it or not. Turns out my old motherboard didn't support 10/100 speed internetting, and my new one does; not only do pages load much more quickly, all file transfers are going noticeably faster!

your old board didn't support 10/100?? That thing must have been _ancient_ o_0

so is it quad like the mac pros used to be (2x2) or one of them newfangled real core 2 quad chips? Either way is awesome, and way nerdier then my two crappy cores hehe

Yeah, my old parts were... uh, old. The only decent thing about my old machine was the 2GB of RAM and the video card, but even the video card was just a GeForce 4... top of the line when it came out, but now it can't even handle Geometry Wars, so... it was really time for me to get a new box.

The chip is one of the newfangled Core 2 Quads, yes. You should see the cooling fan I got for it... it's got copper tubing and looks like a damn hot rod engine or something. It's huge!

They should have called my card the Makes Half-Life Totally Perfect Card. Seriously, with all the graphics options set to maximum awesome, it still runs at 60-80 frames per second. So smooooth. You can blow up a room full of wooden crates while standing in the water (the water that reflects everything) and it doesn't lag at all when shit goes flying. Saving is instant, the sound never stutters (not even when you blow up a gunship), the between-level load times are only a few seconds long and everything is shinier. There was detail I never got to see before; the Stalkers are so much creepier, their skin is all slimy and sinewy now! What's funny is that it's so smooth that I'm actually better at the game, because it's easier to aim and hit what you're shooting at ( ... )

Oh yeah, and I got the BioShock demo off Steam... it runs silky-smooth with all the effects up too. You really need to, uh, take a month off from work and come visit, heehee.

So jealous. I need a new computer so badly it isn't even funny (even though everyone keeps reminding me that mine is only three years old - that's still too old for me!).
