This got debated in our WFR class. We still got the CPR cert, but the studies that mentioned this were brought up and discussed. We were told that for the first four to six minutes, there's still enough residual oxygen in the blood to make the compressions the most important part. So, a good bit of it depends on how far away care is. In urban scenarios where the ambulance is close, this is more of a useful optimization than in the wilderness where care may be days away. (Though, realistically, if someone has a heart attack a day's walk from anywhere, their odds are really not good. We were learning more for victims of lightning strikes and the like, whom you have a much better chance of bringing back.
