New Age Bullies

This article was recommended to me by a friend of D's. You ever know one of those people who takes "law of attraction" theories or "you create your own reality" theories so far that it turns into victim-blaming? Congrats, you've met a New Age Bully. Possible triggers.

I hate New Age Bullies. It's the sanctimonious-ness of it, like they understand Deep Truths about the universe that you're too small or unenlightened to accept. Just makes me want to ask them what horrible deeds they did in a past life to deserve the personality they got stuck with this time around. ;)

That was awesome. I hate that kind of attitude. Sometimes, shit just happens. It's victim-blaming wrapped in New Age nonsense for all the same reasons that everyone does it: if we can blame the victim, we can believe we'll never be one.

Also, appropriate icon is appropriate. :)

Oh yes. Dontcha know that Africa brought the famines, droughts and genocides upon themselves? The Law of Attraction says so!

I kid you not, a few years ago there was some essay making the rounds, positing that the reason there was all that war/genocide/famine/disease in Africa was that the people who lived there were less advanced souls who had chosen that kind of life so that they could learn lessons of basic survival. And that as their souls became more advanced, they'd be reborn into lives with more material comfort so they could focus on other things.

The racism just boggles me, and it's such a convenient way to shrug off any guilt one might have about being a "have" while there are so many "have-nots." Why, they chose this, of course! *gag* By that theory, I guess Paris Hilton is a bodhisattva by now.
