It really pisses me off when men say they can't be feminists. And then you ask them, WELL do you believe in equality between the sexes? And they're like, YEAH OF COURSE.

I have pink stickers that say "this is what a feminist looks like" and I put them on boys' doors - and they don't come off. :D
*nods* I remember going to a "march against rape" thing when i was in college and having a male acquaintance ask me, "Is that one of those...chick things?" Now, I've come to seriously doubt the effectiveness of anti-rape marches in preventing much of anything, but the idea that rape is only a women's issue just boggled my brain. I mean, men rape, men get raped; it can't just be a chick thing.
I was a "I'm not a feminist, but..." for a long time. Not so much because I thought of feminist as lunatic fools as much as because I saw/see Feminism as being whole field of academy and theories about which I know almost nothing about, technically. I'm wary of calling myself something if I don't know how it's defined by itself you know.
But through the years, I've been feeling more and more into feminism ^^ Probably because on LJ I've seen more and more people expressing feminism in ways I was extremely agreeing with (problematizing gender roles and such). I still don't technically know much about what feminism enfolds. Looks like there's a lot of different movements with very different outlooks on things within feminism, so it doesn't tell that much.
I've seen lots of people try to find a new word for it, as you do there. Usually around words about Equality or suches. It'd be good if we found one ^^
There are definitely divergent schools of thought about feminism. I use it to mean that I want equality; others use it differently. Which leads to head-butting. :)

I don't want to cede the word to the lunatic fringe.
Sadly, it seems everyone else already is.

*nods* Which just depresses me. (The ceding to the lunatic fringe, not the couch-snuggling.)
