DOBBS: President Bush's family and members of the Bush administration have long-standing business connections with the United Arab Emirates, and those connections are raising new concerns and questions tonight in some quarters about why the president is defying his very own party leadership and his party in defending the Dubai port deal ( Read more... )

The media is portraying this as if Bush brokered the deal himself. He has nothing to do with this transaction. The fact remains that DPWorld is a multinational firm engaged in an acquisition of another firm that manages container terminals in the northeast. Once that merger is complete, yes, DPWorld will begin to manage some U.S. port terminals just as they manage terminals in Germany, China, India, South Korea, Australia, and many other countries. http://www.dpiterminals.com/gallery.asp?PhotoCatID=1 Clearly, the rest of the world is content with this company's management.

This recent development comes as a shock to most who see the Bush Admin as being staffed by a bunch of xenophobes. He's proven otherwise.

Aye on the first point, I think McClellen said yesterday that he (Bush) didn't even know about it till the deal was done.

I don't think Bush is a xenophobe mainly because it would be counter-productive money wise to do so. Doesn't make much sense to afraid of poeple that are funneling barrels of money to you and your constituents. I do think that he has an inordinate about of inexplicable trust to some wierd people over there.

I think this might just be the first thing that I don't completely disagree with Bush on. The UAE is quite different from the rest of the Arab world, both culturally and politically. I mean, security could be a little bit threatened but I don't think it is any more a threat than planes arriving from the UAE. There's really no anti-American sentiment there and all the connections to the Bush family portrayed in the media are rather weak I think. Too weak for it to even be conspiracy in my opinion. I think the Bin Ladens have a stronger connection with Bush than Dubai Ports. And as you and Mylett both agree, Bush did not know about this deal until the public mayhem came about. And he is being pro-deal (probably not really realizing its implications) just because his administration tells him to. Puppet ( ... )

By the way, some more points I thought about...

They say that some of the 9/11 hijackers had bank accounts in the UAE. Well they failed to mention that they also had accounts in Germany and the US.

They also forgot to mention that oil rich UAE has many other gigantic investments all around that world, and not just The Carlyle Group.

etc, etc.

Ok, that's it for now.

peace.
