John Updike has died.

Besides a nice obituary, the New York Times ran a poem from his soon-to-be-published collection. The poem is about his own death, and is, as the writer could be, amusing and thoughtful ( Read more... )

He was a wonderful writer who tried to remember that characters are meant to BE people are and meant to talk to and with the people who read them. I sometimes loved his works and sometimes shook my head, but he was never, ever, boring. And to humour and hubris to pen your own obituary? Run, Rabbit, run ;-)
