We always spend Christmas with my in-laws, because it matters to them (if only as a day to gather family), and not in the least to my mom. My mother-in-law has been having increasing difficulty getting around, but a holiday should be marked by a special dinner. She'd bought a huge turkey for the purpose. Kathy says that making a 20-pound turkey for just 5 people makes perfect sense. How else would you have leftovers? :)

Also, it doesn't surprise either of us that kugel was made. I may not have been raised with Jewish foods around, but I can appreciate anything well made and tasty (and what you described sounds delicious). Besides, as Murray said, it was Shabbat. It's also good to know that you enjoyed being there and taking part, and I think it's great that you were able to help your mother-in-law out.
