Eventually managed to find the volunteer 'manual' - took a bit to figure out whether it's possible to be of use without owning a scanner: https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/2.+What+All+Bookshare+Volunteers+Should+Know

Query: When books are released in electronic format are they immediately readable by screenreaders or is there something else that has to first be done?

When someone donates a scanned text to Bookshare--making certain that it fulfills all the requirements such as including all page breaks and it should be in rtf format--then there are still a few more steps before the book is officially accepted and included into the library ( ... )
