To add to my reply to your comment on my LJ, if you're feeling really ambitious (and have the supplies to do it), there are primitive campsites along the C&O Towpath you can bike to. Talk about being just you and the (relative) wilderness! It's quite the awesome.

Similarly, there's a small, relatively unknown (and thus rarely full) campground along the towpath up a little ways from Harper's Ferry. It's the exit either right before or right after Sideling Hill, off I-68 in MD. There's a group campsite off to one side (where I've stayed before), and 10 or so regular campsites. Porta-potties, but no showers.
