It was finally the spring vacation and the clouds ahead were flowing freely along with the light breeze. He just finished his final examinations and he was excited to visit his childhood friend, Chinen Yuri in Tokyo. He meant to go there as a surprise, so he didn’t call in advance. He already brought his train ticket and he was about to board the train. He was by now at the train station, waiting for the next train to come.
He has saved up some money from his part-time job and decided to get back to where he truly belonged: in Tokyo. He had left the city [Read More >>]that he loved so much when his parents died in a car crash, making him live with his grandparents after the tragic incident. He didn’t care though, as long as he had his cell phone and other gadgets as well as his painting paraphernalia, he was fine. Then his thoughts went to back to Chinen.
Chinen loved to play games, especially the ones that he could bring in his bag. Thinking this as a surprise, Satoshi decided to buy him the newest game console that he read in the game magazine that he saw in the bookstore. As he thought about this, the train already was coming and as it stopped, he boarded it along with the people around him. As he sat down on one of the available seats, he realized that he hasn’t seen his friend for so many years, since he had left Tokyo and went to live with his grandparents.
The ride to Tokyo was for about an hour and a half. During the ride, Satoshi’s eyes scanned the things around him, and took note of all the people. There were different kinds of people in his journey: old people, young people, students, and office workers. Half way, he lost interest with the crowd and decided to sleep. He reached his destination at around four in the afternoon; and thought that he wanted to buy the console directly in Ninomiya Industries, thinking that he might get a discount.
The building was vast and large, almost like from the Baroque era; it was almost as big as the Taj Mahal and even the scenery around it was beautiful. The building had a faded yellow paint and surrounding it was colorful flora. He entered the structure with his eyes bulging with amazement. There were a lot of people there, coming and going. Inside the Ninomiya Industries’ building were various kinds of character sculptures, and in the larger corner, there were students in uniforms and even people wearing costumes who were trying out the newly released game console.
When he looked around and saw the information counter, he asked the woman behind the desk where he could buy the console. After getting his purchase, he was about to go to Chinen’s place with the box of game console in his hands, when a loud crack sounded and the building unexpectedly collapsed and slowly, flames erupted. Nowhere to run and hide, he was in panic; as well as the other people around him. Smoke was gradually rising and the flames slowly licked the establishment almost into nothing. People ran in different places, trying to shelter themselves; trying to keep themselves alive.
His heart was thumping fast; his breathing was getting shallow. The moment that he tries to breathe normally, he chokes. The fumes of the fire was sending him to hell, and the more he struggle to get free from the fire, the fumes take him whole. He's suffocating, but he could hear the sounds around him. He could feel that people were surrounding him; trying to get him back alive. Still, he couldn't see these people. He could hear them, but his sight was bad. Maybe he's gotten blind. He sighs in his mind, and though he wanted to cry, there were only dry tears that escape his eye sockets.
The last thing he could remember before he fell into a deep slumber were the sounds coming from the ambulance and fire trucks that were - maybe - surrounding the building. He didn’t know how he could survive this catastrophe, but he tried his best to keep himself alive. He was really trying to stay awake; but the flames that engulfed the building made rocks and pillars and all kinds of heavy effects fall down like hail plummeting to the earth. And one of those hit him hard on the head. After the pain, he felt small but strong hands lift him up and carried him; though he attempted to look at the person, he could only see haze.

The next thing he knew, he was inside a clean white room with no mirrors, and no windows. He tried to look around, but his body was still; unable to move. What was wrong with me, he asks. He tried to look down, and he noticed that his body was covered with pure white sheets. He couldn't even see his own body. There was a beeping sound in the corner and when he glanced at it, he saw that it was a machine that monitors his heartbeat. So, I'm in the hospital, he suddenly realizes.
There were wires and tubes connected to his body; including the IV that was dropping medicine into his veins. He tried to recall what happened, but he couldn't. His head ached when he tried to recall the reason why he was in the hospital in the first place. Upon sighing which caused his chest to hurt, he closed his eyes and tried to get some more sleep. He didn't know why, but he felt really tired even though he knew that he was already asleep for as long as he could remember.
When he woke up once again, he heard people shuffling in the room that he was in. He tried to take a peek, but it seems that his fake sleeping was discovered and the nurses in the room suddenly called a doctor to check on him. The doctor was a beautiful creature; wearing her white coat, she could even be called an angel in disguise. However, Satoshi remembered that doctors also brought bad news to patients.
“Hi, I’m Doctor Hikari and I am the doctor that was assigned to you. How are you feeling?” she said those words with a smile and he had a hard time looking nonchalant.
“I’m okay, I guess,” he replied. He still was curious as to why he couldn’t move his hands or feet. He was still curious as to why the hell he couldn’t even change his position.
“Do you know why you’re here?” Dr. Hikari asked him.
Satoshi thought that it was already obvious that there was something medically wrong with him; that was why he was there in the hospital in the first place. But he didn’t answer rudely. “I can’t seem to remember what happened. All I know what that there was…” then he stopped in mid sentence. Flashes of fire and chaos seemed to come back to him. What was I doing then? He couldn’t remember. All he could recall was the scent of petrol and fire; he couldn’t even remember where he was then, “fire.”
“Yes, Satoshi Ohno, you were severely burned and you have first to second degree burns on your legs and some parts of your arms. Thankfully, we can still consider you lucky. You’re face only had a few scratches and we could still recover your burned limbs and make them like new again.”
He was lying still, not moving and trying to comprehend what the doctor was saying. My arms and legs are burned. Second degree burns… “Does this mean I wouldn’t be able to walk and use my arms anymore?”
“You can. As a matter of fact, a week from now; as your burns heal you’re going to go through an intensive care rehabilitation to help you use them again.” The doctor said a matter-of-factly.
“But I don’t have the money.”
“You don’t have to worry about that,” a man’s arrogant voice suddenly erupted from the doorway, just behind the crowding nurses. “I’ll pay for all your expenses.”
They all looked around to see a man wearing grand looking clothes. He seemed to look tall in his attire, though Satoshi knew that the man was just about the same height as his. The man not only sounded arrogant; he looked like one. The air around him seemed to be cold as ice, but he was smiling.
The doctor seemed to be delighted, “See. You are indeed lucky. I’ll check on you again later, Satoshi.” And with that, the doctor - along with her nurses - left.
“Who are you? And why are you going to pay for my expenses?” Satoshi looked at the sneering man who was still at the doorway, leaning on the doorframe.
“I was the one who saved you from the burning building.” The man spoke haughtily, again. “If it wasn’t for me, you could have died there. Or maybe you wouldn’t be here, with me, to begin with.”
Satoshi didn’t know if he should be thankful or irritated with the attitude of the man that was there, but he sighed in defeat and said, “Thank you, but you don’t have to do anything for me.”
The man shifted his weight as he answered, “I don’t have to, I know that. But I want to.”
Satoshi was now perplexed by this annoying man, “What do you mean by that?”
The man just grinned and left with no more retorting words. Satoshi was left alone agape as he lied down, unable to move, in the hospital bed. The only sounds that he could hear now were the beeping heart monitor and the IV dropping so very softly. Who was that man? He mused. He had no choice, but to let him do whatever he wanted. What was he going to lose, right?
Satoshi tried to recall where he seemed to have heard the voice of the man, but thinking was the last thing he should do at this very moment. His brain might have some damage that he didn’t know. Still, thinking of the man made him feel different. He’s handsome in a way that I couldn’t understand, Satoshi reflected. He seemed to be an established man and the way he presented himself, the man seemed really wealthy.

His days in the hospital became weeks that turned into months. He hadn’t heard anything from the man who had saved him. His burns were gradually healing and the doctor already put him on rehabilitation to help him move his body properly again. His thoughts were still filled with the mysterious man. As he pondered about the person that piqued his curiosity; he had long forgotten the incident that caused his injuries. He decided that it didn’t matter as long as he would still be able to get better.
The therapy was full of pain, and though it has been weeks since he had started with the therapy, he still wondered if his burns wouldn’t leave scars. He imagined himself like a werewolf with the possible scars that he might have and he winced at the thought. He didn’t want any permanent damages. However, his recovery was a miracle; in less than a year, he was able to get better. The wounds didn’t even leave any remarkable scars. It was like the gods were really good and generous to him. And now, he was good as new.
As he was released from the hospital, he was shocked when a black limousine was waiting at the front of the building. He stared at it from afar. Upon exiting the building, he was startled when a man - who seemed indifferent and didn’t seem to be among the crowd - in a pressed suit, approached him.
“Satoshi Ohno?” the man in the pressed suit asked.
Still startled, Satoshi confirmed, “Yes.”
“Please come with me.”
And the man guided him out of the building and towards the black automobile. He entered it with caution and it left the vicinity as if it never has been there.
