work! what has it taught you?

At a webcomics convention a couple of weeks ago, the guy who makes Scary Go Round said some things about work and working that were OMG Exactly the Things I Think. It turns out he is also pretty much my age, though significantly more British. This made me curious: are there lessons we learn about life and work at certain ages, no matter whatSo, a ( Read more... )

How old are you? 38

What is most important to you at, about, or around, work for pay? After basic living expenses are covered so I don't have to worry constantly: freedom and flexibility

What's the biggest lesson you've learned this year? My clients love me, and I should relax!

I love your lesson for the year. :)

And yes, I see more and more that freedom is important to me, too.

How old are you? 36

What is most important to you at, about, or around, work for pay? That it supports me both financially *and* emotionally.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned this year? That abusive work relationships can be an awful lot like abusive personal relationships, and as such, are worth leaving.

Man, I'm sorry about your lesson. I supposed it's better to learn it than not, but it's a sad one to have to learn.

It totally sucked, but I'm glad I went through it, in a way. It helps me really appreciate my current situation, even with its flaws.

I've worked with some folk this year who definitely haven't learned this lesson... so yeah, it sucks, but you end up much better off.

-25

-money is only a part of it. even getting a raise is not that satisfying -- I must love what I do & the organization I'm working for. So I'm looking for a new job right now.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned this year?
-after being both burglarized & mugged this year (and thus losing most of my valuable possessions), I learned what is most valuable to me: the people in my life. So really, I'm lucky despite everything!

I'm glad you're ok, possessions or not.

As you look for a new job, what kind of help would be useful to you? Do you feel like you already know what you want to do and how to go about it? [I have a selfish motive in asking this question, as I'm hoping to start a business/site that offers advice, classes & coaching for people in work transitions. So I'm curious what different people would find valuable in that kind of service.]

Thanks - it was a pretty bad 2 months.

As for new job... I am less concerned about the specific position than the actual company/organization. I really feel like traditional roles are getting outdated - people should be more adaptable any way. So I really think for me tips about scoring unlisted jobs, connecting with the right people, networking with people in similar industries would really help. Classes and coaching sounds intriguing... Who's your audience? I just joined Brazen Careerist (who's targeted towards younger people), hoping it'd help somehow: http://www.brazencareerist.com/profile/yawen-chen

What is most important to you at, about, or around, work for pay? Two things: Feeling appreciated, and feeling confident that the company is stable enough to continue to employ me.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned this year? Returning to my old company after being laid off for nearly two years, I found that my skills were a lot more outdated and rusty than I had expected them to be - partly because the processes have changed, but also partly because I had forgotten more than I had realized I had.

Do you feel more appreciated now at the old company? I haven't seen you blog about work (maybe I've missed it) in awhile. I hope they're doing well by you now.

35.

Feeling responsible and capable for doing good or creating goodness.

This year? Gosh. Probably: Trust your instincts. I was surprisingly able to bounce back from chosen strategic failure very fast because I chose it.
