Perhaps Doris told him to. :) Alternatively, I think the British army has an age at which officers are compulsorily retired (or if they are very senior are taken off the active service list, which amounts to much the same thing). If retiring was his own choice, then he probably didn't know when he made it that his successor would be a woman.
