I got to play with a Dell mini last night that was loaded with some flavor of Mac (I forgot to ask which tasty cat flavor it was). The keyboard is INSANE. The apostrophe/quote key is down by the space bar. The keys are so small and so close together that I couldn't type except with two fingers, and watching every keystroke, and backspacing every other typed key. It was awful. As someone who communicates through the typed word regularly, this would not bode well for my sanity (or my typed communications). You should probably try one before you buy one, just my opinion, of course.

That sentence alone should dissuade you from purchases other than food, rent, and utilities. If you don't know how you're going to pay your bills, then you don't get to buy anything other than what you need to survive.
Also, I'm pretty sure a laptop can't fly you home to see your family and friends.
