Man, does the new lj banner look ugly against my chosen style.

Not sure how to disable it, although you can revert to the old style (as in, LJ generally, not your chosen layout) and that gets rid of it.
You go into... Settings, I think, and somewhere there's a button that says 'Revert to old style'.
