This was gorgeous. Painful with loss and yesteryears that can never come back. But also beautiful, with the hope of tomorrow - the promise of the photo being a real thing, in the end.
And in the middle - ghostly presences, inbetween, quietly watching. <3 <3 <3
I love it - and this was before i realized you wrote it too. That's just how I see he living and the dead interacting. Love remains - and you made me puddle up with Joyce and Spike too.
Well apart from feeling you shouldn't like something just because I wrote it, I always loved the sense I got of the deep affection and understanding that grew between Spike and Joyce; that they came to respect each other as well, but also that she wasn't just Buffy's Mother, but a woman to be respected for herself, and she brought out in him the man he'd always wanted to be but, ironically, would probably never have had the chance of being if he hadn't run across Dru that night.
I nearly went back and corrected a mis-spelling there, but then it occurred to me that, in real life, people mispronounce words, especially when they're trying too hard to get those words out.
And I recall that moment; can't recall the ep, where Dawn realises that for all her heroism and sacrifice Buffy would never be able to command anything more than, at best (and we have to recall when the show was made; no $15 minimum wage back then), minimum wage jobs.
I think Dawn really started to grow into another woman that Joyce could be proud of then; more than they (and I meant her and Hank) could have hoped for.
I hate LJ because it does not give me my notifications and so I missed this lovely story and feel absolutely mortified - and it IS a lovely, gorgeous little piece. Thank you for dedicating it to me and the wonderous elisi! So true to Buffy Summers, so much pain (and no one can truly know the full extent of the weight she carries, the scars criss-crossing her tender heart), but at the end there's hopefulness and a sense of love.
I look forward to what else you can do with Buffy - some present-tense happiness? An actual relationship? I think you could make that process of Buffy thawing or coming out of her shell to love a beautiful thing (not unlike the way you showed the tender, vunerable sides of Faith in the Relish-verse.) I can't imagine who you would pair her with (Satsu, Faith and Tara being already spoken for - another OC? Willow? Fred? Gunn?)
'You're as strong as stone, Buffy; with a heart big enough to protect a whole world. You're more than I - we could ever have hoped for, with the patience of a glacier. You're not alone;
( ... )
That character I promised you, that would be Buffy's happy ending, so to speak, is very nearly fully formed in my head now. We haven't met yet, but that character is not so far away from being written down in a properly fully-formed story.
About time too; for we are looking at a quarter of a century, in terms of that verse, since the night that Spike held Buffy and gave her the strength to go back into battle.
But I promised you a happy Buffy, and by this time she has reached a contentment with her lot that borders on, but isn't quite happiness; she's almost done baking if you will.
Couple of days ago I figured out something about said character that may unblock their arrival.
I'm trying to catch up with some backlogged comments - how is this coming? If it's on hold that's ok. Creatively I've been on hold for months it seems. I'm supposed to start a temporary job in a week so that may help provide an influx of energy and motivation.
While I'm clearing space I thought I'd wave and say thank'ee :-)
Hopefully there will be further stories within this timeline within a timeline soon. That happy Buffy ending is close, and much needed for my own sanity in these dark times.
IRL all the heroes can do is stand up and say, "Not in My Name!"

It also gives me a chance to read them through another's eyes; 'see' them anew as 'twere.
Thanks again for spotting my error; not a typo, but a mistake that my brain just did not see.
