Many years ago in my weekly D&D campaign the party had gotten pretty chewed up. As I recall, no one died, but most of them were pretty low on hit points

Huh. I'd think the difference would be frickin' obvious. CLW cures so much less, and if the party had any prior experience of cure spells I'd expect them to be able to tell the type of Cure spell just from the effect.

If any of the rolls had been out of range, they'd have noticed.
So they just thought they'd gotten lousy rolls.
I figured that reflected the fact that their *characters* don't know hit points from leptons.
