My home is in Frankfort, Kentucky, which has a single track running down the middle of Broadway, passing in front of the Old Capitol building and its annex. I used to work in a building literally a stone's throw from the tracks. Not far from that building the tracks go through a short tunnel. The tracks still see use, but used to be far busier.
Being a bit of a rail fan I'd occasionally watch as trains went by. One time i saw several flatcars loaded with massive, armored boxes labelled Uranium Hexaflouride. There were also tanker cars labelled Liquified Natural Gas and Caustic Soda.
If that train had had a serious wreck - especially in the tunnel - downtown Frankfort would still be uninhabitable. (Not worried about the uranium; they test those containers in staged train wrecks.)
